Read more Osteoarthritis is an exceptionally common condition with approximately 8.5 million people in the UK & 32.5 million adults in the US being diagnosed with the condition. Osteoarthritis is the naturally occurring ageing process that occurs to all of our joints. It refers to the fact that the cartilage in our joints becomes slightly thinner, not so smooth and more dehydrated as we get older and this can make it more susceptible to injury and subsequently pain. Osteoarthritis, for many people is a persistent condition, which means you've had pain for longer than three months. If this is the case, it is vitally important to have a good understanding about how the pain process actually works, so that you can manage your osteoarthritis optimally. Unfortunately, there are still a lot of myths and misconceptions in society when it comes to pain that can really inhibit people's recovery. In today's video I talk you through exactly how the pain process works, how it is always an output of the brain and how having a good understanding of this can improve your symptoms. Read more Osteoarthritis can cause chronic pain, more recently known as persistent pain which is any pain that has lasted longer than 3 months. It is a huge problem world wide with 43% people in the UK are affected by persistent pain and this figure rises to 62% in the over 75s. The the U.S. and Australia the prevalence of persistent pain is higher than that of diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer combined. There are many reasons that the figures of people suffering with persistent pain are so high but part of the reason is that many healthcare systems are treating optimally and as a results people with pain often don't have an accurate understanding of how pain works and the sort of things that can make it better or worse. That's why Genuine Physio have put together a little mini serious on understanding pain in osteoarthritis. In this video I discuss, just like your brain has the ability to learn and new task of skill, it also has the ability to learn pain, via a process called neuroplasticity. Osteoarthritis is the naturally occurring ageing process that occurs to all of our joints. It refers to the fact that the cartilage in our joints becomes slightly thinner, not so smooth and more dehydrated as we get older and this can make it more susceptible to injury and subsequently pain. Osteoarthritis can vary widely from person to person and there is quite a large spectrum of severity. At one end of the spectrum you may have no pain and just some slight stiffness and right at the other end, you could be struggling to weight bear and sleep at night. One exceptionally common feature of osteoarthritis, unfortunately, is flare ups. They often come & go and you'll often feel you have good days and bad days. There are many reasons that you can develop a flare up: overuse, poor sleep, stress, low mood or even changes in the weather appear to commonly affect people with osteoarthritis. As a result, it is important to know how to manage a flare up. There are a number of different things that you can try and do to improve your symptoms during a flare up and I go through them all in this video. In addition, I'll also talk you through exactly what you shouldn't do after a flare up so that you can gradually get back to what you love doing. I hope you enjoy the video and thanks for watching! My role as a musculoskeletal physiotherapist was put on hold and people were not able to see their doctors due to COVID.
